Those who choose not to watch TV (or whose
TV programs come late in the evening), come to the
bazaar. The area around the post office is where people
hang out. Or use to. In recent days, with shopping
complexes coming up just about everywhere, the hangout crowd
is spread thinner and wider. But the bazaar continues to
be the centre of Kayalpatnam.
The day is not complete without a trip to the
bazaar - on the cycles or increasingly these days, motor
cycles. The days's news and gossip are lapped up
gleefully - along with parotta set or kanji and manja
vaada. When in home for the supper, the news is shared
with rest of the family. The issues are analysed threadbare,
commented upon and judgements passed.
It is not bed time yet. Between 10:00 and
10:30 in the night, most of Kayalpatnam these days (like rest
of the Tamil-speaking world) tunes to Kudumbam on
Sun TV. At the end of it, sleepy eyes and tired mouths
hurriedly engage in a last bout of discussion on the day's
episode and then hits the bed content. It is Good Night
atlast!
