The Kayal First Trust has instituted an annual award to honour the Best Kayalpatnam-based School based on performance in the HSC (+2) Public Examination. This was first announced during the 2008 Meet the State Toppers event held in Kayalpatnam on June 8th, 2008.

From the third year onwards (2011), the awards format has been changed. Rankings are announced in two top levels -

--- Best Overall Schools (involving all the schools)
--- Best School Category-wise

:: BEST OVERALL SCHOOLS

METHODOLOGY [BEST SCHOOL - OVERALL] (from 2011)

The rankings are decided on a 500 points system. For each school, data is taken from Top n number of students (where n is the total number of students who took the Public Examination from the smallest school).

1. Maximum of 100 points - equivalent to average percentage (out of 1200)
   
2. Maximum of 100 points - equivalent to pass percentage
   
3. Maximum of 100 points - equivalent to percentage of students passing in First Class (60% or above in Total)
   
4. Maximum of 100 points - equivalent to percentage of students scoring above 900 (75% or above in Total)
5. Maximum of 100 points - equivalent to percentage of students scoring above 1080 (90% or above in Total)

School ranked # 2 - Shield
School ranked # 3 - Shield

RANKINGS (Category - Overall)

:: BEST SCHOOL - CATEGORYWISE

METHODOLOGY [BEST SCHOOL - CATEGORYWISE] (from 2011)

The rankings are decided on a 400 points system.

1. Maximum of 100 points - equivalent to pass percentage
   
2. Maximum of 100 points - equivalent to percentage of students passing in First Class (60% or above in Total)
   
3. Maximum of 100 points - equivalent to percentage of students scoring above 900 (75% or above in Total)
4. Maximum of 100 points - equivalent to percentage of students scoring above 1080 (90% or above in Total)

CATEGORIES

Categories are formed based on strength of the class that took the public examination. For example, all schools with class strength between 1 and 25 are grouped together and considered for ranking, all schools with class strength between 26 and 50 are grouped together and considered for ranking and so on.

However, to be taken as a Ranking Category - the slab must contain atleast 3 schools. For example, if the number of schools in Category 1 - 25 is less than 3 schools, that Category is clubbed with the next Category (26 - 50 in this case) and so on - until we have 3 or more schools.

School ranked # 1 (Category - students strength 75 or less) - Rs.5,000 + Shield
School ranked # 1 (Category - students strength more than 75) - Rs.5,000 + Shield

RANKINGS (Category - students strength less than or equal to 75)

The rankings (until 2010) were decided on a 300 points system.

1. Maximum of 100 points - equivalent to pass percentage
   
2. Maximum of 100 points - equivalent to percentage of students passing in First Class (60% or above in Total)
   
3. Maximum of 100 points - equivalent to percentage of students scoring above 1000 in total
