On some of the walls of Kayalpatnam these days, one can see certain posters pasted. The message in
these posters contain words thanking a few gentlemen for their efforts to bring peace between
the Chairman and the Councillors of Kayalpatnam Municipality. The news is that the Chairman and
the Councillors - who were at each other's throats until recently - will now start working peacefully
with each other. They will be aided by a 11-member team (what legitimacy this team has is an
interesting question by itself). That things came to this stage is a shame. One hopes, with
this truce declaration, the silly fighting season is over. However, given the players involved, one
can sense this is but temporary.
One really cannot but wonder - with this truce, what happens to all the allegations hurled by both
the sides? The Chairman had alleged some of the councillors are hellbent on making money using their
offices. The councillors had alleged that the Chairman doesn't spend enough time for Municipality,
he is arrogant, high-handed and so on. Given this acrimonious background, what is this truce? You
ignore my doings and I ignore yours?! Or something for better?!!
For the sake of the town, we hope both the Chairman and the Councillors will take take some lessons
from the events of the past few weeks and change themselves. They must realise people didn't elect
them to see them squabble in public and private. They had, and some continue even now to have, hopes
that some of the pressing problems the town faces (like adequate drinking water supply, health issues
- with recent upsurge in Dengue fever) are seriously addressed. What they have got so far was the show
of some very grown up men and women playing a ridiculous game - feeding their ego - at people's cost.
Is this the end of that? Only time can tell.
