The case will get much stronger if exposé goes to larger public. I strongly encourage reaching out public media such as NDTV or CNN IBN (since both are at loggerheads, one of them may help to publicize the issue). Also, please reach out to social activists and other public interests. The town cannot fight it alone. This is a problem not only for Kayalpatnam or Kayalpatnam Muslims alone, but to every other town/village in this surrounding and especially to the fishermen. One cannot expect everyone to have awareness as much as those having access to this article.
The case has to be built in multi-façade, substantiating representative evidence; and awareness campaign. Although a ten year old report may be a good start to begin the investigation, it cannot be considered as evidence – in no research means. A fresh sampling should be performed to substantiate the current situation. Along with various surveys suggested by folks, should find a way to examine the level of contamination on food sources and air.
Not only those poisonous elements listed in the article, I also suspect elements of PCB, halogens, asbestos dusts etc. could be found if enough samples can be collected for the testing. One can find numerous articles relating heavy metal poisoning through fish consumption. Since the digestive system of fish is incapable of processing heavy metals, the particles remain within fish’s digestive tracts and pass it on to those consumes. Generally chemical industries and fisheries cannot go together and you would find in many western countries fishing on water source in close proximity to industries is generally banned It is conspicuously damning why the government still allowing fishery in this region.
Although I am quite concerned about those involved in fish-mongering in town, given the situation, it is plausible to avoid fish, given the strong relation to the kind of ailments found in the town and the sources of suspect – until everything become clearer.
