A minor correction - Obama's father comes from Kenya, not Nigeria and he has no relation to Nigeria.
This election really broke the Israeli (AIPAC) influence hype in the American politics and even challenged their influence among the ordinary Jews. There was an advertisement played all over Florida in which Benyamin Netanyahu appeared and openly asked American Jews to vote for Romney.
Obama did speak in an AIPAC sponsored conference to ask for Jewish votes during this election campaign; however, he was criticized by right-wing elements for not visiting Israel in the last four years. What is important to be noted is - despite all the efforts to brand Obama as anti-Jewish, American Jews overwhelmingly voted for Obama. Obama received 69% of all Jewish votes.
In this election Democratic Party fielded at least three Muslim candidates for the congress and two of them, incumbents - Keith Ellison and Andre Carson, are re-elected back to serve their second term in the Congress. To the disappointment, the third candidate, Dr. Syed Taj, succumbed to smear campaigns by some Indians (although many Indians supported Dr. Taj going beyond the religious lines) as well as Christian right-wing.
Nevertheless, there were criticisms from the liberal circles on the Democratic Party leadership itself when the Party adopted the “traditional” resolution calling for open support to Israel during the party primary election convention despite a strong show of opposition from the delegates against the resolution. The other criticism was that the convention didn’t allow any Muslim representative to speak despite the party has two sitting Muslim congressmen and there were three Muslim candidates fighting in the congressional fray on Democratic Party ticket.
Finally, Obama is no angel in any means. He alienated the same vote bank that supported him in the first election and still voted for him in this election. Many voted for Obama in this election because none of the third party candidates are stronger like Ralph Nadar or Ross Perot. Ralph Nadar was the spoiler in 2000 election. He took away 97000 liberal votes in Florida which would have otherwise gone to Al Gore and Bush won that election by just 500 votes. Obama's vote bank expected a significant change in the direction; however, Obaman continued the policies of Bush with an exception to the health-care.
Despite all these the commonsensical circle is truly happy for not electing an idiot, Mitt Romney, who assumes nearly half of the country’s population is nothing but a burden.
It is important for Muslim communities to recognize “one-person-one-vote” concept is the best way to defeat, a) impunity; b) nepotism (dynasty politics); and c) tyranny. – People should be left to choose their choice instead of a handful few enforcing their choices upon the people. People should vote based on their trust upon the candidate and not to vote in the line of caste or religion.
When electing a religious leader, look for religious values; when electing political leader, look for political ideology; and when electing an administrator, look only for administrative skills. A candidate should win only based on the person’s standing within the community and the people will vote for him when the candidate can relate with people’s issues.
Wherever “one-person-one-vote” is frowned upon, the political leadership is always tyrannical. Muslims don’t need to look for examples anywhere but Khilafat be it Abbasids or Fatimids or Ottomans and also tyranny was the one single reason all these so call Khilafatic dynasties reduced to rubbles. The Emirs refuse any fair competition, fear challenges and disallow debating. For such “Emirs” – “one person one vote” is dangerous.
