Our scholars / Muftis of the past have issued fatwas against several inventions, and in fact there were some legitimate reasons for some of them. For example
1. Printing Press was Haram (about 500 years ago). Reason cited was "If you want to learn Sahih Bukhari, come to me (a scholar). I will teach you all the hadeeths, and you can write them down. If we print, IGNORANT PEOPLE WILL HAVE THE SAHIH BUKHARI copies and MISUNDERSTAND the hadeeths"
2. Radio was haram. The fear was, "How come a box repeat what was spoken from several kilometers away? It must be a sihr / black magic". King Faisal requested some scholars to recite Qur'an, and then everyone agreed that radio is not black magic.
While we should be moving forward in making use of MODERNITY (Tools, Laws, Thought processes, etc), let us also explain the stuff to those who don't understand. Also, let's RESPECT the old scholars who had disagreed with modernity
