happy to see our unity in diversity :) .. please involve the politicians they may support adopting our town in some of their health schemes, that will provide continuous support in these assessments, treatments etc., thanks for all who actively involving them in these awareness programmes. but if you use women volunteers in these assessments the results may be much accurate since our men wont approach ladies.. conduct one to one scheduled interviews instead of asking them to fill in the forms etc.

A comforting move by GRH

MADURAI: The Department of Surgical Oncology of Government Rajaji Hospital will adopt Periyapattinam in Ramanathapuram district, where concentration of cancer patients is more, according to B.K.C. Mohan Prasad, Head of the department.

Talking to The Hindu here on Monday, he said that the decision was taken following Health Minister’s visit to the village during the ‘Varumun Kappom’ screening camp, after reports on cancer incidence in the coastal village, especially among women, spread.

It came to light when the National Service Scheme students of Thassim Beevi Abdul Kader College for Women, Kilakarai, conducted a cancer awareness programme at the village with the help of the local Jamath.

Following this, another survey was conducted at the village which indicated an alarming number of cancer cases.

In addition, a cancer detection camp, funded by the substantial non-resident Indian population of Periyapattinam residing in Saudi Arabia, was organised using ‘Masila’s Cancer Diagnostics,’ a new invention by an Indian scientist, V. Masilamani, Professor of Laser Physics, King Saud University, Riyadh.

The equipment, developed by Dr. Masilamani, detected cancer at an early stage from the optical analysis of body fluids like blood and urine, employed laser/light induced fluorescence and ‘Raman Spectra’ for analysing and identifying cancer specific molecules in body fluids.

This propelled the State Government to act quickly. Thanks to the initiative taken by the Minister for Health, K.K.S.S.R. Rajendran and the Minister for Housing Suba. Thangavelan, an exclusive cancer wing would be started at the Ramanathapuram Government Hospital and patients referred to the GRH, the nodal centre for cancer, for further treatment, he said.

Its really sad to see more and more death for this threatening killer disease. I reckon the awareness i came across so far is not enough for our community. (they just did some physical assessments for breast, ovarian and oral cancer but we need much more keen laboratory assessments)

In Periapattinam, Ramnad District they did a massive camp for which they invited health minister and few other ministers and the nature of the camp was like to identify cancer prone cells i mean indicators for cancer in the very early stage, few scientists visited i guess they r from singapore.. and after assessment they found people at various stages risk.

and then they reviewed their food patterns mostly consisted of DRY FISH (KARUVADU), FUNGUS AFFECTED NUTS PISTA,BADAM etc., pickles, spicy foods, USAGE of SPOILED FRUITS AND VEGETABLES(these above foods are guessed to be having causative agents), OILY FATTY FOODS, junk foods, (these feeds the cancer cell).. surveys, assessments and then awareness based on assessment were done and the public when we reviewed again they understood the seriousness of the problem and quiet aware of the warning signs.

What i would recommend is in our community we need some kind of massive awareness camp like this, to achieve this they first need to form an organizing committee, allocate funds (costs too much but there are benefits), involve local girls college students in survey..
